Dan’s Story

In this short film, Dan shares his experience of spending time at Flora in the Orchards.

Dan’s story offers a glimpse of what social and therapeutic horticulture can mean in practice. It is not simply about gardening. It is about being part of a place, learning through doing and finding purpose in work that is real and visible. The garden allows people to work at their own pace. Some days are active and sociable. Others are quieter. There is space to concentrate on a task, notice the landscape or simply become absorbed in the natural world for a while.

Dan’s film captures something that can be missed when we describe Flora Cultura’s work from the outside. The people who come to Flora are not passive recipients of a service. They are gardeners and active participants in the life of the site.

Their work is helping to restore the former orchards, establish new growing areas and shape the future of Flora in the Orchards. Every cleared bed, planted seed and cared-for plant becomes part of that shared progress. As the garden develops, it creates new opportunities to learn, contribute and return. The seasons bring different tasks and no two days are quite the same, but the sense of purpose remains.

We are very grateful to Dan for allowing us to share his experience in his own words. Personal stories such as his explain the value of this place more clearly than any formal description could.

Flora in the Orchards is growing and changing.

So are the people within it.
