Grounding at Flora Cultura

In the garden, grounding can be both a physical and a metaphorical experience.

We talk about ‘grounding’ as a positive thing in our lives … no matter how robust we may be, everyone experiences times of worry and anxiety and we learned in lockdown how important being in nature, in our gardens, going for a walk in fresh air really was.

In the garden, grounding can be both a physical and a metaphorical experience.

Physically, it’s the act of connecting with the earth through your hands and feeling the soil, the grass, the plants and experiencing the natural world directly.

Metaphorically, grounding in the garden involves finding stability, focus, and a sense of rootedness amidst the cycles of growth and change. It’s about connecting with the present moment, nurturing yourself and your environment, and recognizing the interconnectedness of all things.

What our gardeners experience at Flora in the Orchards

Letting go of anxiety

We’ve seen individuals arrive tense and unsure, only to become fully absorbed as they connect with plants and wildlife. This immersion calms minds and releases anxiety.

Purpose, skills and pride

Being given responsibility—planting seeds, nurturing seedlings, harvesting vegetables—gives clear structure, improves coordination, literacy and self-esteem.

Healthier lives

By taking home fresh produce, participants are experimenting with new foods and wholefoods, enhancing diet quality and diversity which further supports mental wellbeing.

Social bonds

Working together, sharing produce and stories, our gardeners build supportive networks—something often missing in clinical or isolated settings.

And we are always touched by how much these individuals look forward to their days at Flora Cultura … the enjoyment is writ large on their faces, and that says it all!
